Overall
NXT had a fantastic show this week! I was a fan of nearly every match we saw and was captivated by some of the better match ups this week. The North American Championship series continues to be one of the better ongoing programs in wrestling currently with Dexter Lumis, Finn Balor, and Timothy Thatcher delivering a fantastic match. I’m a huge fan of this series seems to be trending in the direction of putting over newer talent on the NXT roster. As much as I would’ve loved to have seen Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano head to the ladder match it is the smart move to invest in newer names like Bronson Reed and Dexter Lumis. I am looking forward to what next week’s match and the eventual pay off at TakeOver XXX.
Once again I am super impressed by the depth of the NXT women’s roster the tag team match kicking off the episode showed some of the best of women’s wrestling without even featuring a huge name like Rhea Ripley who will be challenging for a number one contender spot next week. On the non title side of things Shotzi Blackheart took on Mercedes Martinez in a match that I wouldn’t be surprised to see main event NXT a few months from now.
NXT is doing a great job of building towards TakeOver and building toward the future of the brand. So, let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of NXT 7/29/20.
The Good
- Io opening and then a brawl that leads directly into the tag match. Great action to start the night off.
- These four women have great chemistry in ring.
- Damn Dakota Kai kicking out of the diving double foot stomp. She looks super strong right now!
- Tegan hitting Candice with the illegal knee strike while the ref wasn’t looking. We stan a babyface who is willing to play dirty!
- Damn Roderick Strong and Johnny Gargano is a captivating match!
- If we could get a month long program between Johnny and Roderick I would be happy.
- Dakota Kai’s backstage interview (up until her response to Rhea) and Rhea confronting Dakota.
- The UE’s backstage segment was fun, I’m glad to see these guys have a fire lit under their asses.
- Martinez pulling off the release german suplex from the ropes on Shotzi.
- Ridge Holland is making his NXT debut next week.
- Keith Lee’s promo in the ring was solid.
- Cameron Grimes walking out after Lee’s call out of Kross.
- UE attacking Imperium was awesome!
- The triple threat match was a lot of fun!
- I loved the chain of submissions that lead to the finish.
The Bad
- I’m open to a feud between Adam Cole and Pat McAfee but I don’t want to have to pay attention to his show to keep up with it.
- Dakota Kai being like “We’ll see what Mr. Regal has to say about that.” like a snotty child.
- Mercedes Martinez was not selling anything. I don’t know if she was directed to do that but it made the match feel one sided in the wrong way. It looked like Shotzi was the only one who was working.
The Ugly
- No ugly here. Go home enjoy your wrestling!
